In 1929, Edward Hubble realized that all matter in the universe was expanding with no indication of slowing down.
Since matter is continually expanding, he realized that there must have been a point in time when it was all packed together in a single, central location at some point in time.
This lead to his formation of the Big Bang Theory, which suggests that all matter as we know it today came from a tiny particle roughly the size of an atom that exploded into the universe as we know it today about 15 billion years ago.
What is pushing the matter of the universe away from other parts of matter is unclear, whether it is energy remaining from the initial blast of the Big Bang, or if it's a different force. This mysterious force has been dubbed "dark energy".
